Reported sales results at office supply provider Staples (Nasdaq:SPLS) came in very strong during the first quarter thanks to the July 2008 acquisition of Corporate Express. This partially masked dismal top line trends at the flagship store operations, but Staples is much more than a retailer these days and has considerable upside potential in its stock price.

Shares of Gap (NYSE:GPS) have performed well so far this year on enthusiasm that its operations will return to a sustained period of sales and earnings growth. A higher share price leaves less room for error, but recent management moves appear promising, as do current improvements in consumer confidence.

Year-to-date, consumer discretionary is one of the best performing sectors in the S&P 500. Top on that list is the retailing industry, with many department store chains boasting gains between 20% and 60%. JCPenney (NYSE:JCP) stock is up some 30% so far in 2009, which is solid news for existing shareholders. Given the strong run, Penney’s appeal is more uncertain for prospective investors, despite a number of promising signs. (Learn to pick investments on your next trip to the mall in our related article Analyzing Retail Stocks.)
