The stocks of companies competing in the home-construction and home-improvement markets are struggling right now; many are trading near their 52-week lows. But are there any potential turnaround plays among these sagging stocks?

Of the handful of home improvement-related companies that presented at Southwestern Showcase, Dallas-based Craftmade(Nasdaq: CRFT) was the smallest, but it has a number of interesting investment characteristics.

Ballantyne of Omaha(NYSE: BTN) has a market capitalization of only $62 million, but its industry dominance and solid annual cash flow-generation capabilities have been impressive enough to possibly turn the head of the Oracle of Omaha. However, Warren Buffett himself would be quick to point out that the future is highly unlikely to mirror past results.

Eagle Materials(NYSE: EXP), spun off from homebuilder Centex(NYSE: CTX) in January 2004, is one of approximately eight domestic manufacturers of gypsum wallboard. At the showcase, Eagle detailed that the top three producers include publicly traded USG(NYSE: USG), National Gypsum, and Koch Industries, which collectively control 65% of the market. Eagle competes among the next tier of players, and the wallboard division comprises nearly 60% of total company sales. Eagle also has a sizeable cement-producing operation that accounts for 25% of total sales. It competes with behemoth Cemex(NYSE: CX) and many regional players in the cement space.

I added Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia(NYSE: NOK) to my Motley Fool CAPS scorecard back at the end of September, and I must admit the pick isn’t doing so well, as it’s underperforming the S&P by more than 3% so far. Fortunately, my time frame is for Nokia to outperform over the next five years, so I’m not officially in the penalty box yet.

In the Dueling Fools Bull opener, fellow Fool Alyce Lomax sums up well why Costco(Nasdaq: COST) has been such a powerhouse of a company and one of the better stock selections investors have made in recent years: “Costco seeks to build a good, solid, dependable business, with the idea that that is exactly what will reward shareholders over the long haul. And what more could long-term investors want?”

I’m always canvassing the market for investment ideas, and looking at leaders in a respective sector is a good place to start. In the market for auctioning high-end collectibles and fine art, Sotheby’s(NYSE: BID) and Christie’s collectively dominate the landscape. Christie’s can be quickly eliminated, as it is private, leaving minor players, including Escala(Nasdaq: ESCL), Collectors Universe(Nasdaq: CLCT), or Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers(NYSE: RBA). Unfortunately, none has the name recognition or compelling business models of the major auctioneers. That leaves Sotheby’s — but after some initial due diligence, I’m finding the company’s investment merits a bit abstract.

So far in 2006, going global has been a winning move for those investing in the food and beverage space. Europe’s Unilever(NYSE: UL) and Diageo(NYSE: DEO) — both Motley Fool Income Investor recommendations, by the way — have trounced the S&P 500 return year to date. Closer to home, only Kraft(NYSE: KFT) has come close to matching the international behemoths in this space, while uber-consumer product firm Procter & Gamble(NYSE: PG), with its reputation for steady, double-digit growth, has at least been able to match the market average so far this year.
