Bar-code design and print firm Zebra Technologies (Nasdaq: ZBRA) has a solid reputation as a conservative yet profitable and growing technology company. And while earnings just fell 33% for 2006, Zebra hasn’t yet changed its stripes. However, the company may need some help to keep running at the head of the herd.

Hewlett-Packard(NYSE: HPQ) CEO Mark Hurd has made an undeniably big splash since coming on board in March of 2005. After undergoing a major cost-saving restructuring announced shortly after Hurd took the helm of the technology giant, HP’s performance has improved markedly, and the stock price has nearly doubled as a result. Third-quarter results and higher guidance released yesterday demonstrate that Hurd’s plan is paying off in spades; what’s next up his sleeve as the cost-cutting plan reaches fruition?

Cisco Systems(Nasdaq: CSCO) appears to be one of the few large-cap technology firms able to grow somewhat consistently on an organic basis. And like some other tech giants, it is able energize that growth with outside acquisitions. The market liked what it saw when the company released fourth-quarter and full-year earnings last week, sending the stock up nearly 10%. Read the rest of this entry »

A revitalized Hewlett-Packard(NYSE: HPQ) appears to be successfully taking on a number of rivals, such as Dell(Nasdaq: DELL), which is having to decrease the selling price of its computers to effectively compete with HP. Same goes for Lexmark(NYSE: LXK), where HP has undercut what has traditionally been Lexmark’s turf — affordably priced printers.

Comedian Will Ferrell shouted “Blue, you’re my boy!” in the movie Old School, but there’s no way that level of excitement can be translated over to technology behemoth Big Blue.

“Intel‘s (NYSE: INTC) most rapid growth is behind it, but it will likely thrive well into the future. With its stock down, now may be the time to consider Charlie Munger’s advice to buy a great company at a good price.”

Back in our Sesame Street days, we all learned to identify when one thing is not like the other. In the large-capitalization growth space, Intel(Nasdaq: INTC) sticks out like a sore thumb — it’s the kid on the playground no one wants to play with.

It’s unfortunate that one of the most widely held stocks in the U.S. has proved to be such a frustrating investment. After “skyrocketing” to nearly $3.50 per share back in early October, Lucent‘s (NYSE: LU) stock has fallen about $1.25 per share, to a new 52-week low of $2.20.

While reviewing Adobe‘s (Nasdaq: ADBE) latest quarter, I was surprised to find that 30% of the software companies in my portfolio no longer exist. We mostly have Oracle to thank for absorbing the likes of PeopleSoft and Siebel Systems; its buying spree may not be finished yet, since it’s rumored that Larry Ellison’s software juggernaut has previously shown interest in BEA Systems(Nasdaq: BEAS). Symantec(NYSE: SYMC) recently snapped up Veritas, while Adobe itself just completed its acquisition of Macromedia. What’s with all the acquisitions — and is Adobe the next juicy target?
