Investing in big-box retailers is leading to big blowups these days, with surprisingly dour results from the likes of Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), Best Buy (NYSE: BBY), and Sears Holdings (Nasdaq: SHLD). The crater du jour was Motley Fool Inside Value pick Home Depot (NYSE: HD), which is taking it on the chin from many fronts, including subprime woes, underinvestment in its stores, and uncertainty about the sale of its Home Depot Supply business.

Home Depot‘s (NYSE: HD) color for its corporate logo happens to be the color most associated with Halloween. That’s fitting, since underinvestment in its store base is coming back to haunt the company, now that it has challenging industry conditions to deal with, too. October will probably come and go before investors begin to see any improvements, but in investing, patience can pay off.

Investors have been left in the dark, wondering whether home-improvement giant Home Depot (NYSE: HD) will be able to regain its former glory. Yesterday’s Q4 and year-end earnings announcement offered little insight, but recent developments suggest the company is finally turning over a new leaf.

As Fools enter 2007, one of the biggest questions on investors’ minds is what will happen to the homebuilding market. Recent existing-home sales trends came in better than expected, but the market is still unsure whether trends have stabilized, or whether large domestic builders such as Toll Brothers (NYSE: TOL), Pulte (NYSE: PHM), and D.R. Horton (NYSE: DHI) will soon return to rapid new-home growth.

My Foolish adversary is talking like a bear but walking like a bull. After all, he admitted to being long shares of embattled Home Depot(NYSE:HD). I’ll cut him some slack, though; based on what I outlined in my opening arguments, I’m not selling, either.

“Home Depot is el Cheapo.”
That’s a paraphrase from an avid Foolish reader describing his opinion of the product quality at home-improvement behemoth Home Depot(NYSE:HD). But it’s also is a fitting description for the company’s stock. Sure, the company has experienced its fair share of public-relations snafus and concerns about service levels and product quality, but it is addressing certain shortfalls at its stores. These issues are short-term in nature, and the company is a financial powerhouse, having posted stellar historical growth that could continue well into the future.

Home Depot‘s (NYSE: HD) latest slogan is, “You can do it. We can help.” I think I can do it, but at this point, I’m not sure how much Home Depot can help me at its stores — or help my portfolio beat the market.

The daily headline trail for Home Depot(NYSE: HD) is beginning to rival that of any high-profile Hollywood breakup. Deceit! Betrayal! Will management and shareholders ever be able to face each other again?
